Birdweek Lord Howe Island

One of eleven World Heritage areas in Australia. Often described as the most beautiful island on earth, its twin mountains tower over the opal lagoon, enclosed by a white, surf-fringed reef. Over 85 percent of the native forest remains, seabirds breed within the settlement and the marine environment is pristine.

Eighteen species of landbirds breed in the Island forests, including the rare Woodhen. Fourteen species of seabirds breed around the Island, in colonies of tens of thousands. These colonies are accessible and a highlight of the Birdweek is to visit these birds close up.

Lord Howe is now the only known breeding ground for Providence Petrel which should have arrived back to island by March. Fleshy-footed Shearwater breeds in substantial numbers on Lord Howe, with possibly half the world's population present. Other important species breeding within the preserve include Kermadec Petrel, Black-winged Petrel, Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Little Shearwater, White-bellied Storm Petrel, Masked Booby, Red-tailed Tropic Bird in greater concentrations than probably anywhere else in the world.

Several migratory wader species are regular visitors to the island, principally are Double-banded Dotterel, Eastern Golden Plover, Turnstone, Whimbrel and Bar-tailed Godwit.
Four endemic birds are present. Lord Howe Island Woodhen, reduced to some 26 individuals in 1975, has been successfully bred in captivity and now numbers around 220. The other endemic land birds are Silver-eye, Lord Howe Island Golden Whistler, both reasonably abundant. The Lord Howe Island Currawong is relatively common in the southern mountains, with lesser number found in the north.
The Island also has a fascinating blend of tropical and temperate marine life, including the most southerly coral reef in the world.

Ian Hutton is your Birdweek Guide and has been exploring the island researching and recording its flora and fauna for the past 20 years. In that time he researched and photographed all of the natural history of the Island; producing 7 books and a number of scientific papers.
In 1983 he was the first person to be licensed by the LHI Board to conduct guided botanical and reef walks on the Island. Since 1986 he has been leading eight day tours for groups such as The Australian Museum Society, Australian Academic Tours, Friends of Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens, and Queensland Ornithological Society.
