Round Hill & Lake Cargelligo - NSW
Lake Cargelligo by Greg McInnes
The colour and the subtlety of the desert make the Outback. After a colossal season, the perennial wild flowers bloom and the rich blossoms of the mulga trees attract a myriad of birds. Then there are three lakes in the system - Sheet of Water, Lake Curlew and Lake Cargelligo (which includes the Bird & Animal Sanctuary and two islands), there is also the Lake Creek Wetland. We will be exploring these waterways by land and by boat if people are keen, as it is often the most comfortable way to encounter the spectacle of mass bird flocks.

This is also the land of raptors; Peregrin Falcons, Hawks and Wedge-tailed Eagles. On the plains the Emus strut and the Red Kangaroos boom.

Major Mitchell by Greg McInnes
The splendid birdwatching includes Major Mitchell's Cockatoos, Mulga Parrots and the mallee form of the Australian Ringneck that dart in bright green flocks. Families of dumpy, grey Apostlebirds hop and glide along the sides of the roads while stunning, brilliant-metallic-blue Splendid Fairy-wrens dazzle in the harsh bright light. White-browed Babblers prise insects from beneath bark and logs and Red-capped Robins flit between the ground and deadwood.

Limitless horizons and vast blue skies make these sparsely populated outback waterways mesmerising.
