Leisurely Birding Malaysia
 Great Hornbill |
The rainforests of Peninsula Malaysia offer some of the most exciting birding in the world. The ancient Sunda forest bird families that excite everyone include hornbills, broadbills, pheasants, trogons, pittas, malkohas, barbets, babblers and so much more.
On this tour we will explore two of the most famous birding locations in Malaysia. The giant Taman Negara National Park is the oldest and largest protected area in Peninsula Malaysia protecting over 4000 km of mostly lowland rainforest. It is classic jungle birding at its best. Some of the megabirds we will hope to encounter include Lesser Fish-Eagle, Crested Serpent-Eagle, Crested Goshawk, Crested Fireback, Malaysian Peacock-Pheasant (scarce and shy), Great Argus, Masked Finfoot (rare), Thick-billed, Little and Large Green Pigeons, Jambu Fruit-Dove (scarce), Blue-rumped Parrot, Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot, Raffle's and Chestnut-breasted Malkoha, Scarlet-rumped and Red-naped Trogons, Rhinoceros Hornbill (the best known of the nine species of hornbill in the park), eighteen species of woodpecker, six species of broadbill, five species of pitta; in fact the park list is some 380 species!
 Gurney's Pitta |
Fraser's Hill is also famous for its montane bird fauna and just about every species we will encounter here will be different from Taman Negara and the climate will be refreshingly cool after our time in the lowlands. We can explore a variety of forest trails and roads adding to our list of memorable sightings. Some of the interesting species we hope to find include Blyth¹s Hawk-Eagle, Black-thighed Falconet, Mountain Imperial pigeon, Red-headed Trogon, Red-bearded Bee-eater, Helmeted Hornbill, Fire-tufted Barbet, Bay Woodpecker, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Grey-chinned Minivet, Blue-winged Leafbird, Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo, Green Magpie, Blue Nuthatch, Chestnut-capped Laughingthrush, Cutia and Large Niltava to mention a few. The park birdlist is close to 250 species.
Beyond the birds we are likely to encounter interesting mammals, reptiles, amphibians and diverse plant-life. This is an easy tour that introduces the participant to the fascinating world of Asian rainforests.
