Montague Island Penguins, Albatross
& Whales
SAlbatross
Shy Albatross by Nevil Lazarus
Montague Island is a very special island. Not only is the area very beautiful with granite boulders lording over summits covered with bright yellow lichen but the wild life is abundant; something hard to find close to Sydney.

The delightful Little Penguins nest on this very important island, as do the Short-tailed and Sooty Shearwaters - together, which is highly unusual. And down below on the shoreline Australian Fur Seals haul-out, porpoise and sunbathe in colonies of huge grand male to frolicking cute youngsters.

Whales are also about during the 4 days that our trip is running and together with Wandering Albatross, Hutton's and Fluttering Shearwaters the boat trip over and back promise multiple pleasures. I suspect the seabird viewing from the island will also be rewarding if the weather is conducive. Little Grassbirds called incessantly whilst our NPWS guide spoke, which we will also haveduring our stay, as host and guide throughout our 48 hours on the island.

You will also have the opportunity to give a little to the island, by participating for a couple of hours on each of the two days we are there, in assisting with seabird habitat restoration. Yes you are asked to pay big dollars and work a little too; but I think you will find the whole weekend very satiisfying and it is part of the conditions of staying on the island. A good idea for the long term of the wildlife, and it will put a halo on each of your heads.

The superb accommodation is the beautifully restored original Head Lighthouse Keeper's quarters and it is a joy to live as they did (but with Modern Miele comforts!) in these extraordinary red cedar rooms; verandah with breathtaking views of the ocean, courtyard and lighthouse by your side. There is twin share only and there are share bathrooms close to the 5 bedrooms.

If this sounds like your sort of experience please contact FTB to see if a seat is available.
