Capertee Valley, Dunns Swamp & Mudgee

Take advantage of the spring weather to visit the famous Capertee Valley and a classic Australian country town, Mudgee.

Our first day will be spent birding through Capertee Valley looking for the notorious Regent Honeyeater, sweet Turquoise Parrots and difficult Plum-headed Finches. We will stay in the Valley overnight, eating in the local pub and walking the golf course in the morning hoping the Gang-gang Cockatoos are around.

The beautiful Dunns Swamp is the venue for Reed Warblers, Lyrebirds and perhaps a Musk Duck and we may even delve further into the Wollomi National Park looking for honeyeaters depending on the flowering trees. Fern Tree Gully could produce a Bassian Thrush the caverns lined with native orchids that are in sharp contrast to the dry sandstone you descend from. Two nights in Mudgee township near the Cudgegong River where the she-oaks sigh beside the gurling river.

There is a wonderful Travelling Stock Route that was alive with birdlife on route to The Drip and further west the road leads to the rugged sandstone borders of the Goulburn National Park. We will be forging into Shady Gully where the park has a unique mix of western fauna and flora. Renown for Swift Parrots and Regent Honeyeaters, now there's something that could turn our binos for gleeful wows. On a private property near Munghorne Gap we'll search for the 160 native species recorded here.

The return journey through the western hills of the "nest" that surrounds Mudgee will charm you with an outback remote atmosphere, leaving you fresh after a really lovely few days away at the start of the spring birdwatching season.
