With three very special sites to be visited from Armidale, north, east and west and driving along Thunderbolts Way on the way up, and overnighting in dear little Nundle on the return journey, this trip is superbly designed to take in the best of the New England Plateau's prolific birds and glorious countryside.
On my recent visit I encountered Little Lorikeets and Musk Lorikeets nesting, alongside Hooded Robins, flocks of Diamond Firetails, Tree Swallow filtering the skies of insects and Noisy Friarbirds carolling in delight at the profusion of blossoms.

Over the past 6 months the rains have given life back to these velveteen hills and the trees are fragrant with blossom and heavy foliage. We will visit an Aboriginal sacred site that beggers belief at the pristine atmosphere with such easy access. And of course the World Heritage New England National Park hung with many species of moss in ancient forest trees. Robins should follow these altitudes in summer, always a delightful encounter.
North is the Ramsar Site for our water birds that fly those extreme distances and a good walk is planned to view Musk Ducks, Shovellers, Brown Goshawk; and waders by November.
Nundle township has a beaut pub where we will dine and some may stay, with so much TLC charm you will not want to leave. But the birds will draw you on for a final day of fabulous birdwatching, our common denominator with gay abandon.
