Hunter River Waders Weekend

A three day weekend means some real time to explore this bird rich area. On the Friday we duck off the north heading expressway to look for rainforest species that we often zoom past without regard. And we will spend more time at Minmi Swamp ready to spot the prolific life here. A walk to Nobby's Light House is planned keeping an eye out for settled seabirds to view at close quarters.

By Saturday Stockton Sand Spit awaits us in the morning so no squinting into the westerly sun this time. And on Sunday at 9.00 am we embark on "Sandy Bottom" catamaran for great views of the birds on the famous Newcastle dikes and with the boat solely to ourselves we will be able to stop and view the sights for as long as we like, what a treat. Plus a little jaunt out to the end of breakwater for just a taste of the seabird flocks to be had, close to the coast.

Look out for Gull-billed & Caspian Terns on the rocks near Nobbys, masses of Red-necked Avocets set to dazzle your senses at Stockton Sandspit, Black-tailed Godwits & Bar-tailed Godwits (can you tell the difference?), Pied Oystercatchers, Whimbrels, Eastern Curlews and Curlew Sandpipers massed on the iconic "dikes".
Further upstream amongst the mangroves White-breasted Sea-Eagles and Whistling Kites soar and listen for Mangrove Gerygones in the mangrove forests. And those Terek Sandpipers on the oyster leases with their orange legs......or are they yellow; plenty of discussion assured as always with
