South West Queensland
Bowra
Gnarled wattles standing tall above a low shrub layer, break the burnt orange slopes and plains leading down to a series of glistening lakes - Currawinya National Park. After heavy rain the series of lakes support thousands of waterbirds, an inland oasis, and the 2004 monsoonal rains have reached all the way through this area. On the coast it has been noted that there are less waders, most likely due to the birds moving inland again to feed on the abundance. This is the time to visit this area.

WBWoodswallows
Bowra Property, where we will be spending a full day has had lots of rain over the past 18 months. It is blooming. High grass feeds Zebra Finches, Rufous Songlarks are singing and flying, and above, a bevy of raptors soar - the area is alive with activity.

ThargotoKilcowra
Further west samphire herbfields, mulga open shrubland, low woodland and gidgee woodland are a complete eyefull of inland Australia at its best. Crimson Chats and Chestnut-crowned Babblers throng the roadside with other dryland species like Major Mitchell Cockatoo, Orange Chat, Mulga Parrot, White-fronted Honeyeater and Splendid Fairywren all on the cards.

The variety of landscapes and abundant waterbodies make Bowra and Currawinya rich in birdlife and for anyone who has been there - the experience of a lifetime. Some cannot wait to go again. The timing is perfect so do it. See the feast after the drought.
