Eyre Peninsula
Rita'sEyre06
Beautiful Eyre Peninsular by Rita Johston-Lord
Magnificent Coffin Bay estuary with its grand expanse of rambling channels and waterways and startlingly beautiful bay is just one of our prime destinations. Here we will be looking for Rock Parrots, Ospreys, Hooded Plovers and other heathland and sea coast birds. Winter is the time this country is at its glorious best with many birds moving in from the islands to the mainland.

The other striking destination is Port Lincoln National Park, remote and with a reputation in the birding world to make your mouth water. Mallee Whipbird, Blue-breasted Fairy-wren, Western Yellow Robin and Purple-gaped Honeyeater means that the habitat is wild, humanless thick mallee with a coastline of quiet coves, sheltered beaches and sheer cliffs.

On the journey to - what better place to stop than Arid Lands Botanic Garden, near Port Augusta; a birdwatcher's delight. From walking trails through the garden we may see the Rufous Fieldwren, Chirruping Wedgebill, White-winged Fairy-wren and White-fronted Honeyeater.

All the way across to Ceduna to try for the Scarlet-breasted Parrot and Yellow-plumed Honeyeaters, and stopping along the way at other vast South Australian National Parks. Then down this alluring coast; the most eastern of Australia's Bight to places like Streaky, Venus and Baird Bays with huge white dunes, wetlands and long surf beaches this is country dreams are made of.
