Flinders Ranges
EParrot
Elegant Parrot by Nevil Lazarus
Ancient and damatic mountain landscapes, peaceful tree-lined gorges, a tremendous wealth of birdlife and the sense fo space make the Flinders Ranges one of the best birding destinations in Australia.

We meet in Adelaide for dinner on Day 1 and next morning hop straight along the coast picking up the Elegant Parrot, Slender-bill Thornbill and maybe even a Rock Parrot if conditions are right. Arriving at Port Augusta can mean only one thing.... Aridlands, a must see botanic -buff desert heaven with White-winged Fairywrens and Chirruping Wedgebills amongst the amazing flora and Rufous Fieldwren and Red Throats on the adjacent ridges.

Everything about the Northern Flinders for the next few days is spectacular: the colours of the stratas in the soaring rock formations; the Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies with their stiped tails; the shiny red Sturts Desert Pea; the rugged peaks at sunset, and the dappled gorges in the heat of the day. And in the midst Wilpena Pound promising Short-tailed Grasswrens, one of South Australia's endemic birds.

Leaving the ragged ranges we will spend the next two nights in Leigh Creek with trips out to Mt Lyndhurst to hunt up the Thick-billed Grasswren, Chest-breasted Whiteface and Cinnamon Quail-thrush. And further afield to the Strzelecki Regional Reserve to have a good chance at the Eyrean Grasswren which would be a highlight for any trip. And any old Gibber Chat would certainly make my day too.

This is hard unforgiving country and is sure to put you in a completely different space. There are no background noises here, just the crystal clear voices, excited raised after seeing new birds for the first time.......

After all the ticks we will wind our way back through to big old Murray River Red Gums, overnighting in the fine wine country of the Clare Valley, surrounded by Musk Lorrikeets and Adelaide Rosellas. The overpowering green will refresh you but the stony desert stories will linger for many months to come.
