Jenolan Caves Weekend

Two days of mountain magic with mystery around every escarpment, plateau - even cave.
Carol will be introducing us to some of her favourite places on the other side of the Mountains. We will be exploring both heath and woodland areas. Some of the woodland birds we expect to see include the Diamond Firetail, Dusky Woodswallows, Yellow Thornbills and a good diversity of honeyeaters including Fuscous and White-eared. With our woodland birds rapidly disappearing it is a treat to see some of these birds. The heath birds hoped to be sighted include the Flame and Scarlet Robins, Rock Warblers and Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens. Raptors bound to be about are the magestic Wedge-tailed Eagle, Brown Falcon and Little Eagle.
This area is rich in natural history with the spectacular Kanangra Walls, one of the most impressive features found on the other side of the range. Kanangra Walls situated on the Boyd Plateau has unique wilderness qualities highlighted by views out over aptly named "Grand Gorge". You look across to such magically named places as Mount High and Mighty, Mount Stormbreaker and Mount Cloudmaker. The great cliffs are home to one of the states venerable species, the Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby. The Peregrine Falcon is also a common inhabitant of these cliffs. There is a great diversity of plant species on the Boyd Plateau, may high altitude plants are represented providing a unique mix with the Blue Mountains plants.

And then, of course, there is the world renowned Jenolan Caves with its limestone formations put down 500 million years ago. We all remember the caves, but how long was it since you last visited. There will be an opportunity for the adventurous to go into one of the caves. Or alternatively, wander around Caves House to soak in the atmosphere of this magnificent Victorian guesthouse with it's delightful old world charm. This is also a great area for birds.

Other interesting formations in the area include the Grand Arch, Blue Lake, Carlotta's Arch, hanging swamps, pink igneous intrusions; what an amazing natural diversity.
Birds, plants and mountain views make this a great way to unwind, particularly for those short on time.
