Newcastle is always a complete delight.

This year Lesser Sand Plovers have been sighted by Alan Morris and others at Stockton Sandspit. Black-tailed Godwits & Bar-tailed Godwits are coming into glorious hot apricot breeding plumage. Pied Oystercatchers, Whimberels, Eastern Curlews and Curlew Sandpipers mass on the iconic "dykes". And Terrick Sandpipers on the oyster leases with their yellow legs.

The bridge is back up into Kooragang Island and another is in the midst of being built so access is assured to this area of intrigue. Later on our walk to Nobby's Lighthouse we'll look for Gull-billed & Caspian Terns on the rocks and practice focused tern iding.

At 9.00 am Sunday we embarked on the stable twin -hulled boat "Sandy Bottom" for great in depth views of the birds on the famous Newcastle dikes. And with the boat solely to ourselves we are able to stop and view the sights for as long as we like, what a treat. Plus a little jaunt out to the end of Knobby's Lighthouse for just a taste of the seabirds to be had close to the coast.

As we travel further upstream amongst the mangroves White-breasted Sea-Eagles and Whistling Kites soar, and listen for Mangrove Gerygones in the mangrove forests.
