Tasmanian Endemics
Hobart, from a birdwatchers point of view, is one of the most ideally situated capitals. All the Tasmanian Endemics - Tasmanian Native-hen, Green Rosella, Dusky Robin, Scrubtit, Tasmanian Thornbill, Yellow Wattlebird, Yellow-throated, Strong-billed and Black-headed Honeyeater, Forty-spotted Pardalote and Black Currawong occur in the region. And that means a lot less travel and more birdwatching.
Mount Wellington is our first day out, offering spectacular views over Hobart and the Derwent River estuary. Climbing to 1270m this landmark offers a variety of habitats from snow gums with Austral-montane flora to dry sclerophyll forest and in between wet moist gullies full of giant trees ferns. This provides ideal conditions for many of the endemic birds and we should be humming along by end of the day when we reach Brunny Island for the first of our three nights stay.
Brunny Island is of international fame, wild and secluded this island so close to Hobart has all our target birds. Even the chance of a Royal Penguin drifting in amongst the Little Penguins at dusk and of course the Forty Spotted Pardalote being the most infamous little fellow we will be looking out for.
Early morning walks right from the accommodation along the beach and dinners in a quaint little restaurant that is said to have the best food in Tassie, this promises to be a memorable time. Forget the Christmas rush and deal with it on your return in a relaxed fashion, due to your birding holiday frame of mind.
Day five sees us flying from Hobart down over the Southwest National Park to a remote corner accessible only by air to hopefully see the endangered Orange-bellied Parrot from a hide close to the airstrip. Beautiful Firetails are also attracted to the feeding station of the captive-breeding program for the Orange-bellied Parrot nearby. And after only a few hours here our flight back will make Hobart our last nights stay.
We will be arriving in Hobart on Day 1 by our own independent means, with an option to use up those frequent flyer points or travel down from Sydney on the "Tasmanian Spirit" watching the seabirds on the way. The trip has been placed so that the timing is perfect to fit a trip to and from in on the ship, with a recommendation for the return journey to be under taken in case the ship is late arriving. If you get sea sick you might prefer to book a plane flight. It's your choice.
